Hush (2016) – REVIEW

May 16, 2016

Admittedly, I knew nothing about Hush – not even that it was a film at all – when I saw it show up on Netflix. But the cover art (are we still calling it ‘cover art’?) looked pretty cool with it’s creepy masked guy. So I put it in my queue. Soon after its … More Hush (2016) – REVIEW

High-Rise (2016) – REVIEW

May 12, 2016

Ben Wheatley has directed some solid films – Kill List, Sightseers, and the very weird A Field in England. (those are the ones i’ve seen in raddest to decentest order) So, when I heard that he had a new film called High-Rise coming out, I was excited to check it out. When the trailer came out, … More High-Rise (2016) – REVIEW

Exists (2014) – REVIEW

May 9, 2016

At some point in the recent past, I was down a Sasquatch films rabbit hole online. I was surprised to find that there is no shortage of films about our beloved North American skunk ape. I’ve forgotten why I was down this particular rabbit hole. I’m not a particularly huge fan of Bigfoot … More Exists (2014) – REVIEW

When Animals Dream (2014) – REVIEW

May 5, 2016

I am ALWAYS skeptical of Netflix’s estimates of how much I will like a film. There have been 2-star estimates that I’ve given 4 stars. There have been 4-star estimates that I’ve hated. But when they think I’ll like a title 5/5 stars (or at least over 4.5) it’s typically something that I will … More When Animals Dream (2014) – REVIEW

RAMBLING – Japanese extremes

May 2, 2016

I’m not 100% clear on why I watch the extreme gore and torture films from Japan, but I do. And I’m not talking about cartoonishly/awesomely gory films like, Tokyo Gore Police, Robo Geisha, Machine Girl, etc. I mean, the minimal plot, gut-wrenching gore realism films. (see below for examples) When I learn of one that … More RAMBLING – Japanese extremes

REVIEW – Take Shelter (2011)

April 29, 2016

One thing we can all agree on is that Michael Shannon is at his best when he’s playing intense characters. I almost wrote that he’s an intense guy. Maybe he’s not ultra-intense in person, but it’s hard to imagine that his on-screen personae aren’t indicative of his real life disposition. And it’s that ultra-intensity that … More REVIEW – Take Shelter (2011)

REVIEW – August Underground (2001)

April 25, 2016

I was once surveyed about films and movie rentals for Facets in Chicago. After I explained what I meant by “genre film” to the two college-aged kids doing the interviewing, they asked me why I enjoy those types of films. I gave them my (now famous) “no real danger” explanation. They pressed further, asking … More REVIEW – August Underground (2001)

REVIEW – Green Room (2016)

April 22, 2016

I had an opportunity to see an advanced screening of Green Room from Blue Ruin director, Jeremy Saulnier, last night. So, obviously, I went. (obvious because you saw the title of this review. and because what else am i going to do on a thursday night?) Blue Ruin was great. It was a tense revenge thriller … More REVIEW – Green Room (2016)

Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates – BOOK REVIEW

April 18, 2016

It’s been a while since I reviewed a book, and now seems as good a time as any to return to literary criticism here at NoRealDanger. (pretty hoity-toity, huh?) I was deciding on a good book to review and realized that I would be remiss if I didn’t share with you one of the most … More Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates – BOOK REVIEW

The Invitation (2016) – REVIEW

April 13, 2016

Here’s what I knew about The Invitation before watching it: it’s good and there is potential for spoiling (which I will avoid). With that in mind, I avoided reading about it and looked forward to its theatrical release. (4/8/16) Imagine my disappointment when I saw that it wasn’t coming to Chicago until 4/15! Well, … More The Invitation (2016) – REVIEW

No Real Danger is a blog of my ramblings on the films that I watch/have watched/want to watch/etc. I will typically post (with irregular regularity) comma and parenthetical filled short-form entries. I plan to keep things positive, but I might grumble about something every once in a while. Horror is my “jam” but I may occasionally post about a non-horror movie. Similarly, I usually watch independent movies but not exclusively. Hell, I might even post about music. Who knows?
