Jay Baruchel is perhaps best known as the affable friend to Seth Rogen in This is the End or the voice of Hiccup in How to Train Your Dragon. But did you know that he directed a horror film called Random Acts of Violence? He did! And it’s my 11th (of 31) film of this … More Random Acts of Violence (2019) – REVIEW
Ted Geoghegan’s We Are Still Here is a great little family drama horror story. His Mohawk is an exciting period revenge story. I enjoyed both. When I first noticed Brooklyn 45 on Shudder, I didn’t even add it to my queue. I judged that idiomatic book by its cover. I thought that a séance ghost … More Brooklyn 45 (2023) – REVIEW
Back in my day (yes – i’m grumpy and old enough to start a story with that), you could count on an A24 movie being a decent watch. And you could also count on an A24 horror movie being a decent arthouse scare. I don’t think their track record has held up though. But as … More Bring Her Back (2025) – REVIEW
I thought for sure that I’d reviewed one of the entries into the V/H/S franchise before. I guess not. Well, not really. I did a microreview last October that essentially boiled down to “didn’t love it”. I’ve seen all eight of the main anthologies and both of the spin-off films. The only real review I’ve … More V/H/S/Halloween (2025) – REVIEW
When Demonic came out, I was very excited for it. I’m a fan of Blomkamp’s District 9 and his Oats Studios shorts. The trailer led me to believe that the film was going to be a mix of sci-fi and horror. That’s a cocktail that I appreciate quite a bit! It got some pretty poor … More Demonic (2021) – REVIEW
(putting a SA trigger warning here just in case you need it) Number 3 of (hopefully) 31 for October of 2025 is Bystanders. Another movie that I knew nothing about. I found it in Tubi’s “Horror by Women” category. You’d think that category would be a wellspring, but it’s not. Several of the titles are … More Bystanders (2024) – REVIEW
Next up for the October 31 Movies-a-thon, is Booger. If you read my last post, you might remember that I scrolled through the offerings on a couple of streaming services looking for horror movies that I hadn’t heard of before that were directed by women. Now, that’s not super sustainable because I’ve heard of A … More Booger (2023) – REVIEW
It’s October! It’s time to attempt to watch 31 new-to-me horror movies in a month. I’ve done it before and I can do it again! To kick things off, I decided to go light with a movie that HBO has tagged as a horror comedy. I really didn’t know anything about Your Monster going into … More Your Monster (2024) – REVIEW
The trailer for Death of a Unicorn made the movie seem like it was going to be goofy, gory fun, but I couldn’t help but detect a note of corniness. That wasn’t a dealbreaker though. I’m ok with corny as long as the “gory fun” part wasn’t neglected. It also hinted at some social commentary … More Death of a Unicorn (2025) – REVIEW
35 (Bonus!) Carver (2015) A Halloween set slasher directed by a kid who wasn’t old enough to drive at the time! This one is a pretty straightforward slasher that tried to do things a bit different in its final moments. It is impressive that a 13-14 year old kid made it. Worth checking out just … More 31+ October Micro-Reviews 2024
